He continued his studies with courses in directing and working as an assistant director with Ruth Berghaus, Christian Pöppelreiter, Peter Konwitschny and Johannes Schaaf. He has staged productions at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, the University of Music and Theater as well as the Center for Contemporary Music in Leipzig, the Staatsoper Berlin (Apollo - Saal), the University of Leipzig Days of Music and at the Staatstheater Cottbus. He has taught at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, at the University of Music Leipzig and at the Opernschule Karlsruhe. Since 2002, he has been the director of studies at the Swiss Opera Studio and Professor at the University of Performing Arts in Bern. Mathias Behrends has staged a number of operas from the classical repertoires (among others: Die Zauberflöte, La Clemenza di Tito, Giulio Cesare, Hansel and Gretel) as well as 20th Century works. He developed the creative project form of the Opernwerkstatt (opera workshop) at the University of Performing Arts Bern and has carried out many different themes and performances in this connection. He has also staged oratorios (St. John Passion). In addition, he has been the artistic director of the International Summer Academy in Biel, Switzerland since 2007.
