ANTHONY PILAVACHI

was born in Cyprus, is an Irish citizen and has been living in Germany for 31 years. As a scholarship holder of the 'Foundation Princess Grace of Monaco', he studied Stage Management at the 'Guildhall School of Music and Drama' in London. 2018 Winner of the Austrian Music Theater Award for Best Opera Production 'Capriccio' by R.Strauss. In 2012 he received the ECHO Klassik in the category Opera DVD of the Year for the 'most important, most successful and best' Ring of the Nibelungen 'Production of the last years', which he worked on 2007-2010 at the Theater Lübeck together with conductor Roman Brogli-Sacher.

Mentioned several times in the 'Opera World Yearbook' since 1994 in the category 'best director', Pilavachi is considered a 'master of personal direction and inventor of strong images', according to Peter Krause editor 'Concerti' magazine.

 

In 2002, Pilavachi staged the world premiere of the rediscovered Verdi Opera 'Gustavo III' at Göteborgs Operan and in 2004 the German premiere in Darmstadt. In May 2015 he staged the world premiere of Gordon Getty's 'The Canterville Ghost' after Oscar Wilde at the Leipzig Opera.

 

A highlight at the Leipzig Opera in May 2017 was the outstanding and successful German premiere of Charles Gounod's 'The Rebel of the King, Cinq-Mars'. The first scenic performance ever since 1887 worldwide.
