Laufenberg was employed at Schauspiel Köln from 1990 to 1993. From 1993 to 1996, he was producer and director at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. From 1997 to 2000 he was director and member of the theater management at the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, where he had great success with his dramatization of Alfred Döblins novel Berlin Alexanderplatz. Laufenberg has been the artistic director of the Hans Otto Theater Potsdam since 2003. As from 1992, he has also staged productions at the Musiktheater in Brussels, the Semper Opera in Dresden, the Volksoper Vienna and in Geneva. In the summer of 2008, his production of Ernst Kreneks Karl V. was played at the Bregenz Festival. From 2009 to 2012, Uwe Eric Laufenberg was director of the city opera in Cologne, Germany.
