Born in Zurich in 1977, he studied acting directing at the University of Music and Theater in Hamburg. He directed at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, Münchner Kammerspiele, Schauspiel Bochum, Deutsche Theater Berlin, Maxim Gorki Theater, Théâtre de la Colline in Paris, Royal Danish Theater in Copenhagen, Staatsschauspiel Dresden and Schauspiel Frankfurt. In 2006, he was voted 'Young Director of the Year' in the critics' survey of 'Theater heute'. In the same year he also received the Kurt Hübner Award for Young Directors.


In 2010 was his production of Schillers Don Carlos produced, which was awarded the most important German theater prize “Der Faust” and was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2011. From 2011 to 2016 he was in-house director at the Schauspielhaus Bochum, since 2016 permanent director at the Schauspiel Frankfurt and in-house director at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus. In summer 2018, he staged for the first time at the Nibelungen Festival in Worms. He made his opera debut at the State Opera in Hamburg in 2016 with Rossini's »Guillaume Tell«. Further work in the opera followed under the directorship of Albrecht Puhlmann at the Nationaltheater Mannheim. From season 21/22 he will be the new acting director at the Konzert Theater Bern
