Rudolf Frey was born 1983 in Salzburg, Austria. After assisting directors such as Andrea Breth, Luc Bondy, Martin Kušej, Robert Carsen and others from 2007 he went on to direct operas and plays. He has directed productions for major compagnies and theatres in Austria and Germany such as the Vienna Burgtheater (Das wundervolle Zwischending, Wandlungen einer Ehe).....


Salzburger Landestheater (Le malade imaginaire, Vivaldi’s opera Farnace), Schauspielhaus Salzburg (Nora, A Streetcar Named Desire, Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald), Schauspielhaus Wien (including a theatre series about life and work of Franz Schubert), Stadttheater Klagenfurt (Blithe Spirit) Südthüringisches Staatstheater Meiningen (Ghosts, Egmont, The Gipsy Princess, The Magic Flute), Altes Schauspielhaus Stuttgart, Landestheater Eisenach and the Schlossfestspiele Langenlois.

At the renowned Staatsoper Stuttgart he staged Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco – a coproduction with Welsh National Opera, where he pesented himself with a production of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda in the same season. In Summer 2014 Frey’s Nabucco will be shown at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland. In 2013 he received the prestigious Kurt-Hübner-Regiepreis by the German Society of Performing Arts for his recent works.

Recent engagements include the German premiere of Ifigenia in Tauride by Tommaso Traetta (at the rococo theatre in Schwetzingen Castle, Germany and the international Gluck-Opera-Festival 2014 in Nürnberg) and Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss (Südthüringisches Staatstheater Meiningen).
